The Craig Lab at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Azrieli Research Centre  and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the Université de Montréal has graduate student (applied mathematics program) and postdoc positions available. The lab studies how the immune system responds to threats and how differences between individuals affect these responses. For this, we develop predictive, mechanistic mathematical and computational models to study the progression and treatment of cancer and viral infectious diseases through the lens of immunity. The research in the Craig lab is highly multidisciplinary and conducted in close collaboration with experimentalists and clinicians. We use a variety of approaches, including virtual clinical trials and virtual patient cohorts, to concretely improve therapeutic regimens and patient outcomes. Open positions will focus on circadian neutrophil dynamics in lung cancer, and changes to stem and blood cell dynamics during leukemia and ribosomopathies.

    Important dates:

    Postdocs: From  January 1, 2025

    Grad students: January 1, 2025 or May 1, 2025.

    Requirements

The ideal candidates will have strong academic and/or publication records (depending on career stage) in mechanistic mathematical/computational modelling. Experience in immunology, blood cell dynamics, and/or drug modelling is an asset. Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of independence and excellent communication skills. They will also work well with their peers and collaborators, be detailed-oriented and well-organized. Candidate will participate in lab activities, help with the supervision of students and interns (postdocs), and collaborate on grant applications (postdocs).

Training: BSc/MSc/PhD (stage-dependent) in applied mathematics, pharmaceutical sciences, computational biology, or a related discipline.

Specific expertise: Demonstrated mathematical modelling skills using data-driven quantitative analyses, differential equations, and/or quantitative systems pharmacology; programming skills; prior knowledge of immunology is an asset.

    Funding

MSc: Fully funded (minimum $22,000/year + cost of living increases) for two years. Scholarship recipients receive top up bonuses. Speaking French is not a requirement; French speakers may also take on teaching assistantships.

PhD: Fully funded (minimum $26,500/year + annual cost of living increases) for four years. Scholarship recipients receive top up bonuses. Speaking French is not a requirement; French speakers may also take on teaching assistantships.

Postdoc:  Initial appointment of 1 year (with possibility of extension) starting at $60,000-$65,000/year. The duration of the position is conditional to the:

    • availability of research funds
    • project progress
    • candidate's eligibility to maintain a postdoctoral fellowship status at the university

    Application procedure:

Applicants can submit their application by email to morgan.craig@umontreal.ca  (with marianne.pelletier.3@umontreal.ca in cc) by October 1, 2024. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Please use the subject line Application for open position in Craig lab. In your email, please clearly indicate the position you are applying for and include as attachments:

    1. a cover letter (please describe your research interests and fit for the position)

    2. your CV

    3. the names of 3 references
